Leadership in Energy in Environmental Design (LEED) is a performance based rating system that was initiated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998. Since its launch, the system has become a cornerstone in building standards and environmental sustainability in 133 locations worldwide. In Canada alone, there are now over 1000 LEED buildings and 4000 registered ones certified by the Canada Green Building  Council (CaGBC) making Canada the country with the second highest number of LEED approved buildings in the world.

The LEED system provides a recognized standard for the construction industry to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs. The system also gives builders practical and measurable ways to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
